THE OVERVIEW/THE QUICK-TAKE
A 150-year old Grand Dame in the heart of central London, the five-star Hotel Café Royal was recently reborn, thanks to a head-to-toe renovation, making it one of the chicest beds in town.
Primely positioned in central London, in the heart of the West End on Regent Street, Hotel Café Royal sits nearly adjacent to the private members clubs and tony boutiques in Mayfair and the nightlife-loving streets of Soho. London’s famed theatreland is just around the corner.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
Founded in 1865, Café Royal was an iconic London bar and restaurant that played host to a who’s who through the ages. Oscar Wilde frequented it. David Bowie celebrated here. Princess Diana dined here. And the establishment catered to a host of global glitterati until it shut its doors in 2008. Fast-forward to 2012 when acclaimed architect David Chipperfield – after four years of painstaking work – reinvented the former restaurant as a 160-room hotel. Chipperfield painstakingly retained many original details, while giving the hotel a resolutely modern look. And period details, like sweeping marble staircases, mirrored walls, and rococo plastering, sit happily with contemporary flourishes (think: rooms done up in a taupe, nude, and slate colour scheme and kitted out with Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems and mirrored TVs in bathrooms).
THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
An Icon of Icons
Café Royal was once a bar and restaurant frequented by the prettiest of London’s Pretty Young Things. It was a favoured Bohemian haunt of Oscar Wilde. Fast forward to 1973 and David Bowie famously retired his alter ego Ziggy Stardust in the company of Mick Jagger at the restaurant. And then there are the royals who loved to lunch at the Regent Street spot.
Perhaps hoping to balance the building’s history as a party-loving place, the Hotel Café Royal is now home to Akasha, one of London’s best holistic wellness centres. Inspired by the four basic elements of nature, the centre offers consultations with a number of holistic specialists, along with indulgent treatments, a marble-clad hammam, and a sleek, tranquil indoor pool.
What’s Old Is New
Hotel Café Royal hasn’t left its glam, indulgent history behind, thanks to the property’s four restaurants and bars that offer plenty of culinary delight.
