Once called a ‘Window to the West’, St Petersburg is a melting pot of authentic Russian heritage, striking architecture and world-famous art and cultural museums. Corinthia Hotel St Petersburg is situated on the world-famous Nevsky Prospect, the main street once planned in meticulous detail by Peter the Great. The hotel’s central location offers easy, direct access to major sites of cultural, artistic and economic interest for both leisure and business guests. This bustling city was once the capital of the Russian empire and with its maze of romantic bridges and canals, St Petersburg is as majestic now as it was during the rule of the Tsars.

With over 200 museums, beautiful parks and palaces, an exciting nightlife and a culture built on a passion for art, music, dance and literature, it is a breath-taking journey into a society with a rich heritage. Baroque and neo-classical architecture dominate the skyline and the historical Palace Square is at the heart of the city. One of the most popular attractions is the world-famous Winter Palace. Once the official residence of the Russian monarchs and an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution, the Winter Palace is now better known as The State Hermitage Museum.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is not to be missed - the first structure to be built in St. Petersburg, and thus the birthplace of the city, it never served its intended defensive function. Instead it has had a rich, hugely varied, and sometimes sinister series of uses including the burial place of the Imperial Royal Family. Another must-see is the beautiful 19th century St Isaac’s Cathedral, with its gold dome and sumptuous marble interior. If you have an appreciation of truly awe-inspiring view, look no further than the Alexander Nevsky bridge. At more than 905 meters, it is certainly the longest in St Petersburg, an impressive feat seeing as the city boasts 539 bridges in all – more than Venice and Amsterdam.

Hand-made arts, crafts and souvenirs are in abundance in St Petersburg, but so too is the finest in quality shopping. The Eliseev Food Store is a treasure trove of local Russian treats like caviar and vodka, but if you want more informal shopping, head for the flea market on Kanal Griboedova (summer months only), where the most popular souvenirs are beautiful hand-made lacquer boxes for jewellery or curios.
